About
Thank you for visiting.
I love painting faces. Within its common framework, form, and features, a face can carry almost infinite variations, down to the individual lines on a forehead & the glint in an eye.
When I start a new portrait, I work to establish a faithful depiction of my subject first, through careful sketching and underpainting, paying close attention to the underlying bone structure and musculature. Then with my choices of color, texture, and brushwork, I try to go beyond, to capture a sense of the subject’s inner life as well. A finished painting conveys not just a likeness, but hopefully also presence.
I paint with oils on linen or canvas, from a photo or live model. If you’d like to discuss commissioning a piece, please reach out. Prices vary depending on timing, size of the canvas, and complexity of image.
